South Florida's Iguana Problem

Your Property

Iguanas are undermining seawalls, stripping gardens, and contaminating pool decks across South Florida. Letting the problem grow only makes it harder to solve.

Know the Risks

What Iguanas Are Actually Doing to South Florida Properties

Green iguanas — originally from Central and South America — have established enormous breeding populations throughout South Florida. Females can lay up to 45 eggs in a single clutch, and with few natural predators in the region, the populations expand rapidly. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission classifies them as an invasive species, and on private property, owners have every right — and often a financial reason — to act.

Seawall & Embankment Collapse

Iguanas are persistent burrowers. Along canals, the Intracoastal, and any waterfront property, they dig into the soil behind and beneath seawalls — gradually destabilizing the structures from within. Left unchecked, this erosion can result in seawall failure or embankment collapse, a repair that often runs into five figures.

Landscaping & Garden Destruction

Green iguanas are voracious herbivores with a particular taste for the ornamental plants South Florida homeowners invest heavily in. Hibiscus, bougainvillea, orchids, roses, and vegetable gardens are all targets. A single large iguana can clear a flowerbed overnight, and a resident population will systematically work through mature plantings over weeks.

Health Hazards — Salmonella Risk

Iguana droppings carry Salmonella bacteria, and iguanas are indifferent to where they go. Pool decks, docks, sidewalks, outdoor furniture, and the pool water itself are all common targets. For households with young children or immunocompromised individuals, the contamination risk is real and not something to ignore.

Roof Tile Damage

Barrel tile — the most common roof style in South Florida — creates a gap that iguanas exploit readily. They burrow beneath tiles to nest and thermoregulate, dislodging tiles in the process and breaking the waterproof seal underneath. Homeowners often don't discover the damage until a leak appears or a tile falls and causes injury below.

Pool Contamination

Iguanas are capable swimmers and frequently enter residential pools, especially during warmer months. Beyond the health concerns from contamination, iguanas occasionally enter pools and cannot find a way out — drowning and leaving property owners to deal with the aftermath. Pool enclosures help, but are not a complete solution.

Ecological Disruption

South Florida's native wildlife is already under pressure. Green iguanas compete directly with threatened gopher tortoises by occupying their burrows, and they consume native plant species that other local animals depend on. The ecological cost of an unchecked iguana population extends well beyond your property line.

What We Do

Professional Iguana Control — Built Around Your Property

There's no one-size-fits-all answer to an iguana problem. The right approach depends on how many animals are present, what the property looks like, how close you are to water or green space, and how long the situation has been developing. We evaluate first — then we recommend.

01

Property Evaluation

Every engagement starts with a site visit. We walk the property, identify iguana activity, locate harborage areas and travel corridors, and assess the actual scale of the problem. The quote comes from what we find — not a formula.

02

Air Rifle Removal

Precision air rifle removal is the most effective method for rapid population reduction, particularly for animals that have become comfortable and are regularly visible on the property. We are licensed and fully insured to conduct this work in compliance with Florida law.

03

Live Trapping

Where air rifle removal isn't practical — dense landscaping, adjacent structures, or limited sight lines — we deploy humane live traps. Traps are checked and cleared on a regular schedule throughout the engagement.

04

Ongoing Management Programs

Clearing an existing population doesn't stop new animals from moving in, particularly for properties along canals, golf courses, or green space. Monthly or seasonal management visits keep the problem from returning. We'll recommend a schedule based on what makes sense for your property.

About Invasive Control

Licensed, Insured, and Built for South Florida

Invasive Control is based in Broward County and works exclusively in South Florida — the region where iguana populations are most concentrated and the property damage most severe. We work with homeowners, HOAs, property managers, and commercial property owners throughout Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach counties.

Because no two properties are alike, we don't post rates. The scope of an iguana problem — the number of animals, how embedded they are, what the terrain looks like — varies too widely for a flat-rate model to make sense. We come out, we look at it, and we give you a written estimate based on what's actually there.
